The girls had used a cutting board covered in raw chicken juice.

The Evidence

Test One: Which Bacteria Is Inside the Girls?

I took a stool sample from each girl and put the samples on two different types of agar. Because C. jejuni are very uncooperative in the laboratory I used special agar plates containing their favorite foods. This agar also contains antibiotics to prevent other bacteria from growing. The other agar is made to identify Salmonella. They will appear yellow. Other bacteria will be different colors or won’t grow at all.

Result: C. jejuni grew from each girl’s sample. No Salmonella grew. This was strong evidence against Campylobacter jejun. But two positive IDs are always better than one.
